Here at the Participatory Grantmaking Community we understand how important it is to embed values into every aspect of our work. This is why in 2022 we developed a community-led and collaborative governance structure for our community. We’ve learned a lot from our governance journey so far, about realistic term limit goals, how to work with pay equity globally, and how often you need to update your governance handbook!

We are grateful to our Accountability Circle members who share their wisdom with us, and have guided and learned alongside us in our work to build collaborative governance structures that reflect our values of self-determination, anti-oppression, accountability, transparency, and care.

In 2024 we had 3 Accountability Circle members finish their term, and we’ve invited 3 new members to join the Circle. This circle is the primary decision making body for the community’s mission, vision, values, governance and strategic priorities. To learn more about our Accountability Circle purpose, specification, and selection process, visit our Governance Handbook.

Join us in welcoming our new Accountability Circle members!

Yasmin Farah, Camden Giving

Yasmin Farah, a woman wearing a black hijab standing in front of greenery.

Based in: London, UK

Languages spoken: English and Somali

One thing you’ll bring to the PGM Community: I lead our participatory research work at Camden Giving, so I’ll be bringing insights from our experience developing citizen-led community research projects into the root causes of key issues. Much of this work is made possible by the trust we have built with communities through our participatory grantmaking efforts. The findings from our research feed into our community funding panels, informing their decision-making. We also engage with key decision-makers to influence policy in Camden, and I’ll share the ongoing challenges and learnings from this work.

One thing you are excited about: I’m looking forward to learning from others in this circle and the opportunity to exchange ideas on increasing participation and influencing change. Being part of a space where we can collectively reflect on challenges, push for more equitable practices and hold ourselves accountable to the communities we serve feels invaluable.

Based in: Barbados

Languages Spoken: English

One thing you’ll bring to the PGM Community: I’m bringing the unique perspective of being a young person from the Caribbean who has previously participated in PGM processes as a girl and youth activist, who is now leading those processes with extensive language justice approaches. I know language justice as a practice is an area many of us who do PGM work are often exploring and interrogating and I’m excited to add my voice to the conversation.

One thing you are excited about: I’m excited about the opportunity to both deepen my practices, but also share my expertise. The Caribbean is an area which is comparatively not well resourced, and exploring opportunities to shift that while shifting global philanthropic practice more generally is something I’m extremely passionate about.

Based in: Toronto, Canada

Language spoken: English

One thing you’ll bring to the PGM Community: I’ll bring over a decade of PGMing experience that comes with a passionate commitment to community self-determination and the strong belief that the equitable flow of resources must be rooted in community. I’ll bring this commitment to our PGM community to try and always mirror the processes we use in PGM practices to our work as a global community.

One thing you are excited about: I’m excited to join this special circle of global PGM practitioners to see how we can support the advancement and advocacy for our peer-learning space, knowing that as PGMers we need each other to keep growing, shifting and evolving.

We are so grateful to our Accountability Circle members who supported us through 2022–2024

Thank you all!
